Citizen of the Walls

Everyone believes that inside walls a mouse is safe
But this is not always the case.

A crime has happened.
Walls were built for protection.

But what if the murderer is still in this maze?
A mouse is never safe when a cat knows its hiding place.

Since the walls were built the river has frozen.
The brightness was just a filter that was chosen.

All the clocks stopped and the calendars were wiped blank.
Criminals were now walking on a plank.

The skies turned permanently grey.
The grass turned into old hay.
What can I say?
I can’t even pray.

The smell of roses, I can’t remember.
What month is it?
August, September?

The walls are bigger than a giant.
On them I am told to be reliant.

They will keep the crime away.
‘It’s safe here’ they say.

There are cameras everywhere,
observing their new creation.
Into their eyes I stare.
This is not fair.
I can’t live here.

A hierarchy will be formed soon.
Propaganda is the new tune.

The walls will expand,
that’s the plan.
There won’t be such thing as a free man.

How can we accept this?
We are walking towards an abyss.

Not even my room is safe.
It is still part of this maze.

The cat is hiding,
the guards are guarding,
the mouse is deciding.

Is the wall still a safe place to be?
Maybe he should move to a tree,
meet the squirrels from outside,
which everyone claims have died.

That’s why it is safer here,
way from fear,
away from the pointy end of the spear.
